RIO
DE JANEIRO CARNIVAL
"It is
Monday night
in Rio
but it's
not like
a
Monday night
anywhere else
on earth:
its
Carnival and
the streets
of the
city are
pulsing
to the
beat of
one hundred
thousand samba
drums. On
the parade
route in
front of
Copacabana beach,
dancers on
floats in
feathered costumes
and sequined
bikinis are
swaying their
hips to
the drum
beat, and fans
are cheering
them from
the sidewalks.
The Grupo
Especial, the
14 top
samba
schools who
compete the
for the
title of
Carnival champions
are the
highlight of
the
multi-million dollar
show, the
greatest party
on
earth, but
in truth
the whole
city from
the
youngest child
to the
oldest grandmother
takes part.
You can
join them
too: foreigners
can parade
with the
schools if
they pay
for
costumes and
learn the
theme songs
and
dances in
the weeks
leading up
to the
party.
Viva Brazil!"
2005: February
7 and
8.
