The Pros and Cons of SMS

TASK

SMS: classify the following statements in pros and cons

(do the exercise in your notebook)

  • · Driving and texting is extremely dangerous. Truck Driver Paul Browning ran over a pedestrian due to texting whilst driving. Focus on the windscreen, not your LCD screen, and avoid potentially fatal accidents

  • · Each message is like being in on a secret. It's a confidential one to one that is completely exclusive. Just don't send the wrong message to your Mum.

  • · It can be addictive: A Scandinavian chauffeur once checked into rehab due to his 200 texts a day habit.

  • · It's direct and immediate. No waiting for hours while you wait for someone to return your voice message.

  • · It's discreet, unlike loudly talking into your handset in public. We've all seen the Trigger Happy TV sketch... no more shouting 'Hello? I'm at a funeral, yeah, can I call you back?'

  • · It's generally cheaper than a long phone call, although once you're hooked you probably will have to cough up (see The Cons).

  • · Sending messages in social situations, like a romantic meal for two, can seem rude and unwittingly give your companion the impression you are bored beyond all limits of human restraint with their conversation.

  • · SMS messages eliminate social barriers like extreme shyness, and other things that ordinarily stop you talking to that special someone.

  • · 'Text messaging is killing the pub quiz as we know it' was a rumoured title for a Super Furry Animals album. A good point, and remember that some boozy competitors won't tolerate it, often physically.
